About Me
My name is Sophia Chen, and I grew up on Long Island, New York, where I currently live with my parents, my sister, and our puppy Olli.
I am 13 years old and am in eighth grade at Jericho Middle School. I love playing tennis and volleyball. Drawing is one of my hobbies, and I also enjoy drama and music. While I am interested in all of my classes, I am particularly passionate about writing and technology. I am an active participant in community service and volunteering activities in and out of school.

Academics
I love all my classes but am most passionate about writing, debate and technology. I also take advanced courses at the Long Island University Center for Gifted Youth. All these interests helped me build a strong bond with my peers and develop leadership through team collaboration, research, and competitions.
-
I like to read and write and I am very proud to be the Middle School Literacy Leader. I had great experiences at a few summer writing workshops, where I focused on creative writing, which is my favorite type of writing.
-
I started enjoying debate after attending the National Symposium for Debate summer camp and our school's mock trial class.
-
I am a member of the newly launched Jericho Middle School Research Explorations Program, where we build interesting devices. I had an amazing experience in the International Junior Botball Challenge, and among 100+ teams nationally, my team won 3rd Place.
Athletics
Tennis
I have been playing tennis for five years and became a part of the Jericho Middle School Tennis team in 2022. Our team had an exciting season in 2023. I played first singles and achieved an individual record of 8-2 in singles matches and 3-0 in doubles out of the 10 matches against regional school teams.
In addition to school practice, I also receive training at the Christopher Morley Tennis Club as a High Performance Team player, typically three times a week.
Volleyball
I have been playing volleyball for two years and am a part of the B&B Volleyball Club 14 White Diamond team.
I also receive training at the SPORTIME Club.
I enjoy working with my coaches and the girls from different schools across Long Island and Queens.
More Sports
The more I challenge myself with different sports, the more I find myself achieving 'impossibles' I had never thought about before. I am interested in exploring more team sports in high school using my previous experiences and skills, including ice hockey, squash, skiing, and more.
Arts
Music
I play both the violin and piano. While I was transferring from a school to my current school in 5th grade, I picked up the violin as a new instrument. I quickly caught up with hard work and great determination, joined the school orchestra as a violinist, and later became a concertmaster, which is one of my proudest moments.
I attended the NYSSMA Festivals and achieved Violin Level III with an 'Outstanding' score and Piano Level III with an 'Excellent' score.

Community Service
Ice Cream Charity
I jointly initiated a charity program with my sister Evalyn by collaborating with Carvel Ice Cream shop. We donate part of the sales to national and local charities, and support activities at the Joy Fu Senior Club on Long Island. Under this initiative, the Carvel's, my sister and I have donated more than 500 dollars to charities and over 300 ice cream cups to Joy Fu's holiday celebrations since 2022. The initiative was highly recognized by the club and Nassau County officials.
